I believe we need more religion, not less. Religion plays a vital role in facilitating the smooth functioning of society. What we need to guard against is the abuse of religion and its tendency to be used as a tool for exploitation. As Voltaire once stated, "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him." This is crucial because the idea of God is how humanity creates the idea of itself.
I often hear people who label themselves as free thinkers saying, "Imagine a world without religion." The reality is, you don’t have to imagine it; we've already experienced it. The USSR pursued the eradication of existing religious beliefs as a tenet of its official ideology and enforced atheism upon its citizens. There was no room for religion in Soviet society. The world is still recovering from the atrocities committed in the godless society created by the USSR.
Religion is fundamentally a force for good. I have witnessed hardened criminals, prostitutes, cheats, and people with all manner of vices completely changing their ways due to encounters with religious beliefs. No other system in society can boast such profound power to transform people's characters.
Many of us in the developing world are quick to highlight advanced societies that seem to disregard religion. A historical glance, however, reveals that these very societies were established by deeply religious visionaries, with their legal frameworks often rooted in religious texts.
Consider Samuel Adams, a key figure in the founding of the United States of America. When British rulers threatened him for his advocacy of freedom, he defiantly responded, saying, "Tell Governor Gage that I have long since made peace with the King of Kings." This sentiment underscores the alignment of his political pursuits with his religious convictions.
In essence, I contend that a balanced embrace of religion is essential for the prosperity of society. It provides a moral compass for humanity, aiding us in finding meaning amidst the drudgery of our endless labour.
