Why WHO Should Not Discourage People from Trying New Medications to Combat COVID-19.
I will like to express my opinion on the awareness campaign of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) discouraging people from using local medications and drug mixtures to combat the coronavirus pandemic on the basis that there is no known scientific evidence for such mixtures or drugs to cure or prevent people from contracting the virus.
I understand the advice that we should follow the instructions of health authorities in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, but in my opinion, this particular advice should be given with exemptions. According to WHO and other health authorities, the COVID-19 virus is novel, meaning it is a new strain in the Coronavirus family that the scientific community does not know much about. So, if the scientific community does not know much about the novel virus, and it takes quite some time for science to establish evidence, why put all our hope on science? Shouldn't people, especially Africans, be encouraged to find, mix and consume herbs to see what works? Who knows if God has placed the cure for this disease in fresh pawpaw leaf or one local herb somewhere?
So, my opinion is this; as far as mixture of herbs does not portend a bigger danger to the person taking it, they should be allowed to try all available herbs and medications.
The world needs a cure for COVID-19 urgently and we cannot depend on science alone. Herbalist, "agbo" sellers and nutritionists must all get to work to find a cure for this virus before it consumes all of us.
